THE DOGE’S PALACE AND SECRET TRAILS

The picturesque oriental walls of the Doge’s Palace enclose two different aspects of the same political organization: its magnificent public face with sumptuous halls of power elegantly decorated with masterpieces by some of the greatest artists of Venetian painting, where foreign princes and ambassadors were welcomed, and alongside a parallel and scheming world, often hidden behind wooden panels, housing narrow offices, sinister prisons and the notorious torture chamber. This is an unforgettable tour that will take you from the pomp of state rooms with their golden ceilings to the piombi (lead) cells. Relive Casanova’s legendary escape and walk across the creaking wood-beaming ceilings of the vast Sala del Maggior Consiglio (Great Council Hall).

The Islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello

Board our boat to escape from the crown of Venice and explore the most famous Venetian islands. Murano, world known for its glass blowing art. The tiny and picturesque island of Burano gives an idea of what Venice used to be, beside being famous for the hand-made laces. Then proceed to Torcello, the first human settlement in the lagoon established around the 5th century. Interesting to watch the canals banks that have been reconstructed as they used to be at the very beginning, with poles all around these small islands to keep the ground. The major monuments in Torcello are the little cosy byzantine church of Santa Fosca with its beautiful portico, and the bigger Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta with its famous mosaic that inspired Dante Alighieri for his Divine Comedy. Not to forget the large Baptistery (now visible only few ruins) positioned right in front of the Basilica.

Walking guided tour to reach beautiful churches surrounded by typical Venetian atmospheres, along calli and little campos. In San Trovaso square there is an unusual wooden structure that is similar to the house of the local mountain area. This was an old dwelling for the workers of the squero, a small shipyards for making gondolas. It dates back to the 17th century and since then it has always been in operation. The walk continues to Campo Santa Margherita, a picturesque square surrounded by old 14th century palaces and the little church of Santa Margherita, which is today a university auditorium. Continue to San Rocco School located in the campo bearing the same name. It was founded in 1478 as a charitable institution. The present building was started in 1489 and finished in the 16th. It is famous for a series of paintings by Tintoretto that adorn the rooms. Next to the school there is the church, which is also dedicated to San Rocco. Continue to Scuola Grande di S. Giovanni Evangelista (Confraternity): this confraternity was founded in 1307. The headquarters was built in the 15th century and in 1481 the Bottega dei Lombardi built the impressive gateway in Renaissance style. In 1512 Mauro Codusi rebuilt the great internal staircase. After the school was suppressed by the Napoleonic edicts of 1806 it was acquired by private individuals in 1856 and since then it is still a confraternity today.
